Since you are my readers, and I have not been much of a traveller, I will not talk about people a thousand miles off, but come as near home as I can. As the time is short, I will leave out all the flattery, and retain all the criticism. — Henry David Thoreau

Stone columns, Delphi, Greece

Still in Greece, this time at Delphi, located 150km north-west of Athens on the slopes of the holy Mount Parnassus. Although well known for its artistic and athletic spectacles, Delphi is most famous for the oracle who held court in the temple of Apollo and dispensed wisdom to those who visited. To the ancient Greeks, the oracle’s words words were treated as gospel - to modern science, they are more likely to have been the ramblings of a stoned prophet.

Unfortunately for Nick and I, we were unable to locate any source of magical vapours so we quickly moved on to the home of the ancient Olympic games…

Ancient running track, Olympia, Greece

…where we proceeded to do as the Greeks athletes once did; strip naked and sprint down the 100 metres track. Fortunately for all concerned, our best efforts were just enough to beat the Japanese tourist bus to the finish line.

Olympia, Greece

Next up was a completely different test. With an awesome display of upper-body strength, Nick smashed a 2000 year old world record by toppling three priceless stone columns in one go. I placed a rather pathetic second, not even managing to topple a single one (as recorded on film).

Greek airport security

By now we’d pushed our luck far enough and it was time to leave Greece before the weight of the law came crashing down on us. Being disguised as filthy backpackers, rather than world-class athletes on the run, we managed to slip right through the calvary’s fingers to board our flight safely. Next stop Rome, then on to Dublin.
