Jimmy's weblog

Since you are my readers, and I have not been much of a traveller, I will not talk about people a thousand miles off, but come as near home as I can. As the time is short, I will leave out all the flattery, and retain all the criticism. — Henry David Thoreau

And now a word from our sponsor

Well, they’re not really paying me - in fact I’m paying them - but I’d like to put in a good word for the hosts of this site.

Up until a week ago I’d been running a hosting reseller business through United Hosting. For $US44 per month I had access to 50 domains, 50GB of diskspace and 500GB of data transfer, more than enough to keep my clients satisfied as well as leave some extra resources for this site.

During the last three months, I noticed that I had come to be spending a lot more time than usual dealing with support questions and requests. I can’t put my finger on the reason why, but half of my clients had simultaneously (and apparently co-incidentially) decided it was time to start pushing the envelope of their technical knowledge, largely with disasterous results for their sites.

To cut a long story short, I decided it was no longer worthwhile to continue the reselling business. There was still some money to be made but the increased time commitment had been distracting me from more interesting and potentially more rewarding opportunities.

Thankfully, when signing hosting contracts I’d had the foresight to make sure they all ended around the same time of year, making the transfer of clients and their sites relatively easy and soon leaving just one site remaining. This one.

On a recommendation from a friend, I decided to transfer to Blue Host. For US$7.95 per month (12 months paid in advance), they offer:

  • 2GB disk space
  • 75GB bandwidth transfer
  • PHP, MySQL, PostgreSQL
  • 1,000 POP email accounts
  • FTP, SFTP and SSH access
  • Powerful, cross-browser and standards compliant control panel
  • Multiple log analyser programs
  • 30 day money-back guarantee

If you’re looking for a web host, (now that I’m out of business ;-) I’d recommend giving them a go.

End commercial.
