i dont live in ireland but im studing the civil war as an english prodject! how kids and adults couldhave survived through such hard timesis increadible. it reminds me of iraq,all these murals with soldiers on them. its terrible

i wouldnt have been able to survive through it and i pity those who whitnesed their country been torn apart. <3

Incorrect. In fact, the UVF had been outlawed in the summer of 1966.

I’m afraid it was Loyalists who made the ‘first kill’. Of course, the definition of ‘first kill’ is debatable.

Certainly, Gusty Spence and his ‘UVF’ had killed in 1966. The IRA was basically inactive at that time, though they had been engaged in a short-lived campaign at the end of the 1950s.

I am a unionist, born in Northern Ireland. Not only do I ‘claim’ to be British.. I am actually British. It has nothing to do with the modern name of our sister island.

Read your history: “Isles of the Pretani” was the earliest recorded name for our islands. Pretani was corrupted into “Britanni”. So, “Isles of the British” or “British Isles”.

I am proud to be both Irish and British.

Odd how you can contrast the ‘evils’ of the UVF and UDA with that of the IRA, yet when you talk of the “catholics who have been persecuted, beaten, burned out of their homes,lost loved ones who did absolutely nothing wrong but believe in their own faith” you oddly fail to mention the Protestants who have also suffered all of these things.

i would just like to go back to micks comment about how many people were killed by the IRA during the troubles. the period of the troubles is nothing compared to the centuries of killings the british have done to Ireland. From stealing their land to the famine, to loss of basic human rights, not being allowed to speak their own language and being persecuted because of religion, they have done a lot worse than what the IRA could ever do.

what people dont understand is that these people, regardless of what you think about them,gave up their lives for what they believed in and what they believed in was freedom. freedom for they minority catholics who have been persecuted,beaten,burned out of their homes,lost loved ones who did absolutely nothing wrong but believe in their own faith.Now you say bobby sands was involved in a terrorist organization like the i.r.a and sinn fein now do you honestly believe such organizations like the u.d.a and the u.v.f. are legit organizations and do not commit acts of violence against innocent catholics or catholics that are supposed members of a “terrorist group” as some of you may call the sinn fein party or the i.r.a give your head a shake people. they are all guilty of such acts, but who is to say which is in the right? if you have never seen the violence or experienced it first hand dont comment on something you will never understand or comprehend. my family was born and raised in andersonstown in west belfast and all they ever wanted was to live ther lives in peace and raise their family and i’m sure thats is what everyone there wants also protestant or catholic

we are the island of ireland. it was the worst thing england ever did was invade us. little wonder they are hated the world over for all the destruction, death and misery they have inflicted on innocent people. not 1 person has ever been convicted for the atrocity of bloody sunday. innocent unarmed people and children were brutally murdered all because they wanted basic civil rights - sheer evil on earth. you want to be under the queen, go to england, if you want to stay here, accept the rule of Dail Eireann. tiocfaidh our la!

In response to mick, how is N.I better off being administered by the uk. If Nationalists were to give up 2moro and accept British rule we would lose our national identity just like Scotland and especially Wales. How many people in America etc. Just call the Uk england. well i have to say that the first kill was made by the unionists but i believe that was coming from the campaign of terror thi ira was doing in belfast at the time, wouldnt you protect the people you love from masked thugs beating the guts out of you only for being protestant? dont think so. more or less 3200 people died during the troubles 2300 of which died of the hands of the ira, is that sayng nothing to you? and i also believe that northern ireland is better administrated by the uk.
p.s. i am italian, catholic, and living in dublin so no racism in my letter

People should realise that being born in the North or South of Ireland is irrelevant, as soon as you leave Ireland you are a paddy just like all the rest of us.
