Attack of the killer bees

Thursday September 23, 2004 08:39

According to Russell Wright, head of the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology at Oklahoma State University (try saying that quickly three times), a swarm of bees which attacked workers in Oklahoma last week may have been of the African variety. If confirmed, this would be the furthest north the “killer bees” have ever travelled in the United States.

Although the venom of the African bee is no more toxic than that of the European honey bee, African bees are considered more dangerous because they attack in larger numbers. As it stings, an African bee gives off an odor which attracts other bees, potentially resulting in a far greater number of attacks on a victim.

Thanks CNN, up until now we thought this only happened in the movies.
