An Australian victory for Open Source

The Australian Capital Territory has just passed a bill specifying that “as far as practicable”, public agencies should consider open source when procuring software, and software which does not comply with open or ISO standards should not be considered for use.

The bill also rules out the use of software for which support or maintenance is provided only be a company with exclusive control over its sale or distribution.

This bill would seem to completely rule out the use of Microsoft Office and possibly Windows as well…
