- Standards compliance - Mozilla 1.4 supports HTML 4.01, virtually all CSS2, some CSS3, XML, ECMA script and PNG including transparency. Standards compliance allows website designers to use the latest technologies when designing their sites and have you see them as intended. In contrast, Internet Explorer’s (IE) support of many of these technologies is partial and has hardly changed in the last two years.
- Security - Mozilla 1.4 currently has no outstanding security issues while IE has at least 19 including two which allow an attacker to execute arbitary code on your computer.
- Tabbed browsing - Tabbed browsing allows you to open a number of pages within one browser window and have them appear in tabs. You can even bookmark a series of tabs for later reference.
- Simplified cookie management - The cookie management features of Mozilla allow you to easily control which cookies your browser will accept. To increase your privacy it is easy to block all cookies from third parties (such as advertisers) or to specify that you will only accept cookies that will be deleted when you close the browser.
- Popup blocking - Sick of websites popping up advertising pages? Easily fixed. Mozilla will allow you to choose which sites are allowed to open new windows and which ones aren’t.
- Cross platform - Mozilla runs on around 32 different platforms including Linux, OS X, FreeBSD, Solaris, Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP and BeOS. IE development is now restricted to Windows only and not all versions of IE will run on all versions of Windows.
- Complete control of text size - Mozilla will increase or decrease the size of the text to any size as well as allowing size increases even on fixed size fonts.
- Continued free upgrade path - Microsoft have discontinued work on IE for Mac OS X and the next version of IE for Windows will be the last available for free download. Future updates will require updating your version of Windows. Mozilla will continue to be developed and supported on all major platforms and will always be available for free download.
- Type ahead find - This allows you to quickly navigate a web page by typing the first few letters of the link you wish to follow. Mozilla will automatically jump to and highlight that link. You can then follow the link by pressing <enter>, open it in a new window with <ctrl>+<enter>, or open it in a new tab with <insert>.
- Scaling of printed output - Ever tried to print a page and found it was just too wide or long for the paper? Mozilla allows you to preview your page and, if neccessary, to change the size of the page to match your print size.
