The Victorian government is currently engaged in a massive revenue raising exercise under the guise of ‘road safety’. Revenue from speed cameras jumped from $20.1 million dollars during March 2002 to $33.5 million dollars during the same period in 2003.
In response to this, an email has been circulating purporting to list the location of many of the fixed speed cameras in Victoria. Initially I was a little sceptical but a little research convinced me that the list may well be genuine.
Although a cyclist myself, I am happy to do my bit for society and list the locations contained in the email.
Melbourne
- Cnr Orrong and Dandenong Rds, Caufield
- Cnr Alexander Pde and Smith St, Fitzroy
- Cnr Stud and Wellington Rds, Rowville
- Near Swan St Bridge and Alexandra Ave, South Yarra
- Monash Freeway inbound, 600m before entering the CityLink tunnel
Westgate Freeway and Princes Highway
- The top of the Westgate Bridge
- Hoppers Crossing overpass
- At the first Werribee exit
- At the Little River exit
- Point Cook overpass
- Point Wilson overpass
- Just before the Waterslide, Geelong
Note: These are elapsed time trigger cameras and estimate your average speed between checkpoints so slowing down before each overpass will not fool them. All these cameras are positioned in both the inbound and outbound lanes and tricky to see.
Western Ring Road
- Boundary Road, Laverton North
- Western Highway, Ardeer
- Calder Freeway, Keilor East
- Tullamarine Freeway, Tullamarine
- Pascoe Vale Road, Glenroy
- Widford Street, Glenroy
- High Street, Thomastown
Coming soon
- Eastern Freeway - 5 more cameras
- Monash - 5 more
- Calder Freeway - 9 more
- Hume Highway - 11 more
Other Highways on the proposed list
- Western Highway - Ardeer to Ballarat
- South Gippsland Highway - Dandenong to Phillip Island
- Goulburn Valley Highway - Seymour to Shepparton
- Princes Highway - Pakenham to Traralgon
Also being considered are Mount Alexander Road, Nepean Highway, Dandenong
Road, Burwood Highway, Sydney Road, Springvale Road and Ferntree Gully
Road.

Just want to let you know that new cameras have been installed behind the Millers Road, Altona Signs on the West Gate Fwy.

This is absurd. I cannot believe there is so many speed camera’s on single stretches of road! Also the fact that ‘time elapsed’ cameras supposedly operate. How is it justified to have camera’s estimate your average speed? if they were fixed cameras that booked you on the spot for speeding then i wouldn’t be complaining, but estimating someones speed then issuing an infringement is just absurd. I’m surprised the community has not done more to stop this. In NSW we’re about to get point to point camera’s but they’re only going to operate on sections of freeway and usually only be between two points. Despite that the camera’s will be fully signposted so that drivers know they’re about to enter a speed camere zone. It really is a sinister way to make you guys much worse drivers by spending more time looking at the speedo than at the traffic conditions ahead of you.

hi
im just wondering if anyone knows if the signage legislation is the same here as in nsw? its mandatory up there to inform the driver of approaching speed cameras with at least one sign, but ive noticed down here there are a few cameras with no signs to be seen..is that because the police dont have to or the cameras arent’ operational? x

As far as I’m aware, in Victoria there is no legal requirement for warning motorists that there is a speed camera ahead. Sometimes there may be a warning that there are speed cameras in the area, but most of the time there isn’t any notification at all.
Note that there were a number (maybe four?) of fixed speed cameras recently added to the Melbourne - Geelong Freeway but I haven’t been able to find the locations.
